Hawke's Bay Herald. SATURDAY, MARCH 14, 1868. AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY'S SHOW.

The show of the Hawke's Bay Agricultural Society, which took place at Meanee on Wednesday last, did not attract a large number of stock. This may be ascribed partly to the long continued drought and prevailing depression; and, as regards sheep, to the fact of their having been recently shorn. The weather was fine and there was a fair attendance of spectators, but the exhibits generally proved few in number. Several up-country gentlemen who intended to have shewn stock—particularly Mr. Carlyon — rwere prevented from doing so by some of the causes we have enumerated ; while the season of the year is manifestly unfavorable for showing sheep. Some fine Kirkham Lincolns were shewn by Mr. M. Hill, and several fine specimens of long-wooled generally, but the absence of merinoes was conspicuous. Much regret was felt at Colonel Whitmore's loss — that of a valuable imported ram, which had suffered severely from travelling, and died as it was being brought into the yards. There were some good specimens of short-horn cows, and but one bull. It is to be regretted that the fine herd of Mr. Carlyon and Mr. Nairn should have been wholly unrepresented. There was a failshow of draught stock, some very superior animals having been exhibited. Thoroughbreds, however, had but one representative, a filly exhibited by Lieut. Colonel Whitmore. Some very excellent implements were shewn by Mr. Tuxford ; a sample of magnificent potatoes by Mr. J. Marshall ; and 2 samples of very fine barley. Although, as a show, it cannot be spoken of in very favourable terms, yet a good many animals were got together, quite as many, perhaps, as could be expected under

the circumstances. The universal opinion was that the show should be a Spring instead of an Autumn one. We subjoin the list of entries, distinguishing the animals &c, for which a prize was awarded : — : > CLASS I.— HORSES. / ' Section I.— Thoroughbked. Lieut.-Colonel Whitmore— 2-year old filly.
