An Opening foe Pateiots.— The Auckland Provincial Council, forgetful of the Scripture saying about laborers being worthy of their hire, have expressed their approval of a motion brought forward by Mr. Ball, inviting gentlemen of sufficient leisure and fitting qualifications to accept honorary offices as temporary heads of departments. — Evening Post.
Billiards. — Mr. Hitchen, the Australian champion, played his first game of billiards at the Empire Hotel, Dunedin, on Thursday, the 22nd, giving Beahan 300 points out of 1000, and beating him by 5. When Mr. Hitchen arrives in Wellington, as he is expected to do in a few days, there will be some difficulty in finding a suitable room for him to show his proficiency in, for his exhibitions of skill are certain to be well attended. It has been suggested that the late New Zealand Times office should be turned for the occasion into a billiard saloon. — Independent.
Gas-woeks foe Wellington. —We have been favored with a sight of some very complete plans for gas-works, obtained by Mr. C. E. Carter during his stay in England. These plans and detail drawings — with a very full specification and estimate — were entrusted to Mr. Carter by the eminent engineer and gasworks contractor, Mr. George Bower, of St. Neots, in the hope that, at a favorable opportunity, a local company might be formed, when Mr. Bower would be ready to supply the whole of the plant at manufacturer's prices, and also take a number of shares in the company, as his firm has done in similar cases in Russia and elsewhere. We believe that the same firm, supplied the plant for the Christchurch gas-works, which may now be considered a success. The works shown and described in the plans" and specifications noted above are calculated for a town of 10,000 or 12,000 inhabitants, so as to allow for the growth of Wellington. The total amount estimated as the cost of the whole plant erected, is put down by Mr. Bower 'himself at £9000. Wellington, the capital of the colony, is without gasworks. Even Auckland, with all its depression, is before us in this matter. Can nothing be done P We hope to have more information oh this important subject. — Independent,: /
