An Unpleasant Wipe. — A poor woman, wife of a retired soldier, living at Nuns' Hill, near Valparaiso, has recently brought forth six children at one birth, four boys and two girls, and, at last accounts, was wonderfully well under the circumstances, suckling her children herself, and exhibiting a vigorous vitality. It is stated that there are no engineering difficulties. The projector of the company has been granted 5000 acres of land, with other privileges, by the Provincial Government of Nelson, and is the successful promoter and constructor of the Hokitika and Greymouth Tramway Company, which is said to be now returning the handsome dividend of 70 per cent per annum. The New Govehnoh. — Despatchesfroin the Colonial Office were received by the Buahine, stating that Sir George Bowen's commission as Governor of New Zealand had been forwarded to him, covered by a despatch dated the 20th Nov. Sir George Bowen will, therefore, be sworn in as Governor immediately upon his arrival here, which, as he was at last advices in Sydney, may possibly take place on the sth or 6th prox., should the Ruahine arrive at Sydney in time to allow of his embarking on board the homeward steamer. The despatches were forwarded to Sir George Grey on Sunday morning by the Sturt, which sailed for Manukau by way of the West Coast. The Hons. (Colonel Haultain and J. C. Richmond were passengers by her. It certainly seems rather wanting in courtesy to his Excellency to forward despatches of so much importance by such a roundabout way instead of sending the Sturfc direct to Kawau,— -Irt~. dependent.
