AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A meeting of the Hawke's Bay Agricultural Society was held on Thursday last, the 30th ult., in the Council Chamber. There were present — D. M'Lean,, President ; Messrs. J. Heslop, J. H. Coleman, C. J. Nairn, J. G. Gordon, J. Hallet, J. Watt, T. Tanner, D. Gollan, M. Hill, H. B. Scaly, J. Chambers ; H. S. Tiffen, Secretary ; Lieut.-Col. Whitmore, Treasurer.

Mr. D. Gollan, having taken the chair, called for the Treasurer's balance-sheet, which was read and passed. Lieut.-Col. Whitmore and Mr. H. S. Tiffen were reelected Treasurer and Secretary.

The following resolutions were unanimously adopted : —

That the next show be held on Wednesday, the 11th March, at Meanee. That henceforward the shows of the Hawke's Bay Agricultural Society shall be biennial only, so long as the Southern Agricultural Association hold an exhibition in the southern district during the alternate years. That, with a view to uniformity, the committee are empowered to confer with the Southern Association, in forming a schedule acceptable to both. That the Hawke's Bay Agricultural Society, in the event of the above resolutions being accepted by the Southern Association, shall offer to give a few medals or other prizes, to be awarded by the judges as the committee of the Southern Agricultural Association may wish.

That a committee of management be appointed to confer with , the Southern Association, consisting of Messrs. Tanner, Hill, Heslop, Gollan, Tiffen, and C. Brown.

That a committee be appointed to collect members' subscriptions, entry fees, gate money, &c. Such committee to consist of the Secretary, the Treasurer, Messrs. C. Brown, M. Hill, T. Tanner, and J. H. Coleman.

That a silver cup for the best 60 Merino ewe fleeces, and a silver cup for the best 40 long-woolled ewe fleeces, be offered for competition at the next agricultural show; and' that Messrs. J. D. Canning, H. R. Russell, H. S. Tiffen, D. G-ollan, D. M'Lean, and M. Hill, be invited to prepare the conditions relating thereto. That a silver cup be offered for the best 3 bushels of barley, and a silver cup for the best 3 bushels of oats, grown in the province by the exhibitor, subject to such conditions as the committee of management may. publish. That the committee of management be requested to confer with the Southern association, on the best method of awarding shearing prizes. That judges be invited from other provinces to act at the ensuing show. That the thanks of the Society be tendered to Mr. Maney, both for the handsome manner in which he gave the use of his yards and paddocks for the last show, and for his kindness in allowing the next show to be held there.

One of the Society's silver medals was laid on the table, and instructions given that they were to be issued, as soon as they can be prepared, to the successful exhibitors of stock at the previous shows.
