MEAT FOR EXPORT.
In another ; column will be found a letter- from Golouel Russell, urging upon tho settlers of this province the necessity of doing something iv a matter now engaging much attention at home and abroad — that, of the preservation of meat for export to the home market,
Colonel Russell, it will be seen, makes certain practical suggestions, and concludes by proposing that a meeting of settlers should be called, with the view of cai'efuliy considering the question. Now it so happens that the Melbourne stockowners, who are in precisely the same position as those of Hawke's Bay, have lately held a meeting of the very kiud. indicated. Last number of the Australasian contained a report of the same, which we this morning reputjlisb,, and Which,"*we are-sure, will be perused carefully by most of our readers. It will be seen that preserved meat in tins has beeu regarded as the proper form the new export should ;assupie; and that a company has beeu formed to carry out the idea. This is precisely, we apprehend, what must be done here. It may be that the new export, if successful, will do away with the boiling-down system. If so, so much the better for all concerned, as well as the community generally. We invite -corres-' pondeuce on this vitally important subject. .
