Hawke's Bay Hearld SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1867. INLAND COMMUNICATION.

Notwithstanding the bad times which this province, in common with all the others, has labored under for some time past, remarkable progress has been made in some directions, particularly in that of opening up the interior by means of land and water communication. The Wairoa, hitherto almost a terra incognita to Napier people, has suddenly been opened up by means of the trips of the Cleopatra. Many have already taken the opportunity of visiting that beautiful district, and many more intend doing so ; while, on the other hand, a large number of Wairoa settlers have paid a visit to Napier, transacted business to some extent, and returned to their homes after an absence of two or three days. A little while back, aud such a journey could scarcely be counted upon as lasting less than a fortnight. In a southerly direction, on the other hand, " Cobb" has made the road his own. Bi-weekly trips are now made to Waipawa, and weekly to Porangahau ; to either of which places, or any intermediate locality, passengers are conveyed with comfort and safety, at a low rate of charge. To Meanee, Rymev's express — a very comfortable vehicle, runs twice a day. To crown all, telegraphic communication will soon be opened with all parts of the interior — from the Bluff to the Waitemate. Truly, we live in an age of progress.
