THE KARAKA GOLDFIELD.

-ARRIVAL OF THE S.S. MIDGE WITH 160 OUNCES OF GOLD. By the arrival of the Star of the South irom Auckland, on the night of Wednesday last, we have one day's later papers from that city, containing important news . respecting the success of the Thames goldfields. "We subjoin extracts : — [New Zealand Hbbald.] The s.s. Midge, Captain Stuart, re- .- turned from the Thames gold-field at half- . past 1 o'clock this morning, bringing 160 ounces of gold from Barry's claim. From bur correspondent's letter, which will be found elsewhere, it will be seen that another rush had taken place early yesterday morning and that some more gold is to be forwarded by the next steamer. The Midge also brings up five bags of very rich quartz from a new reef recently .discovered. (From our special correspondent.) Shorfcland, Sept. 29. The Enterprise left at 7.30 this morning, "and the Midge leaves here at 6 p.m. Barry's party send up twelve and a-half • pounds weight (12J lbs.) of gold by the Midge. This, with the reported 500 ounces of gold from Tookey's claim, and a couple of other small trifles that we shall send you within the next few days, may probably enlighten, some of the croakers amongst you. There was a rush late on this morning to a new reef to be called " Break o' Day Reef."' I saw some men "humping" a quantity of quartz from a claim on Messenger's reel this morning. I do not know the value of the quartz, as I have had no opportunity of examining this lot, but I have already sent to Auckland a sample from the same reef. [Daily Sotjtheeit Oeoss.] Thf s.s. Midge arrived at two o'clock this morning (Sept. 30) from the Thames, with 2080z.0f gold from Barry's Eeef. She also, brings five bags of very rich quartz from a new reef, to be crushed and assayed. 'The reports from the field are very encouraging, quartz leaders containing gold *eing daily discovered by prospectors, and nine claims are now producing valuable quartz. Barry's party have 70 tons of quartz stacked up, taken from the leader which yielded the above return. The gold is found to be distributed much more largely in the stone than was ever seen in "Victoria, and its intrinsic value is a little over half that of the Middle Island gold. Several other parties are stacking quartz, and more may be expected in Auckland by the next steamer. Owing to the latemess of the hour at which the steamer arrived, we hold over our correspondent's letter. [Evening- News.] The s.s. Midge arrived at a very early :hour this morning. The news is of the most assuring nature. The first lot of fold in considerable quantity has been rought up, namely, 157 ozs. 6dwts. from Barry's claim. This is tangible evidence of the value of the Thames reefs ; but we believe there will be still more conclusive poof of their richness when capital and machinery are brought to bear upon them. The gold alluded to above has been lodged in the Bank of New Zealand, and will be forwarded to Sydney to be assayed. The following is from our own correspondent : — Shortland Town, The Enterprise arrived yesterday about SHialf .past four, bringing no mail and not passengers. The Midge arrived during the night, but not early enough to land the passengers till this morning. The news respecting the crushing at Coromandel of Tookey's quartz was hailed . witH delight", the yield being much beyond anybody's expectation. A lot of gold (1570z5.) is being sent up Tjy the Midge from Barry's claim. It has Been crushed during the last two or three days only. This will convince everyone that the Thames reefs are what they have been represented to be — rich almost beyond parallel. Hunt's claim has also turned out some very good stuff during the last week, and they nave some gold on hand, but whether they intend to send it up to Auckland or not I do not know. A new reef, said "to be very rich, has been discovered, .and a fewi sample bags of quartz from it are being sent up by the Midge. , There are 70 tons of quartz stacked ready for crushing from Barry's claim.
