WELLINGTON.

, (from a correspondent.) "•.,'-"' : ".'- ■ Uf "f ' 3WM ,1867.^ .' Just a y hurried line by the St. Kilda jo. let you know what is going on.^ When I wrote by the Taranaki the resolution of Mr. Vogelwas not tabled. You . by the papers that Mr. voger was chOfen by the ultra-provincial pairty] to m^ye^he . resolution, and did so last night. Before he did so the party were ■"'fully "aware i that they were in a miserable minority, arid little interest was taken by the House in the result, which, would have found the ultra party beaten by almost 2 to 1, had it been pressed to a division as a party question. The result of the move was, that a committee has been appointed to report as; to the recommendation it can make, jbr the settlement of the financial relations between the two Islands. They are also to report as to the advisibility of handing over native affairs to provincial management; At the same time, decided expression of opinion was given last night by the House that this could not be conceded. The probability is, that the committee will. end invnogood result, beyond acquainting the colony with the real financial relative position > of the two islands. In that sense it will do good and will stop the unfounded statements bo constantly made by southern legislators. The committee, which was originally all Superintendents, was elected by ballot, the I House refusing to admit' the precedent of a committee of Superintendents on any question, being a proper course to take. So ends* move No. 2 of the ultrarprovincialists, -who are fairly beaten and have to hide their future machinations under some other guise. The fight of the session now will be on the Shire Bill and Finance. Unless something unforseen should arise Stafford is safe for. the session. I forgot to say that Carleton moved as an amendment in Vogel's resolution that, after the word " that " all the words of Vogel's resolution should be "left out and " insular separation &c." be inserted. This was proposed to shew the divided state of the ultra party, and how antagonistic its different elements are to each other. For instance, that Wellington's interests are exactly opposite to those of Auckland and Otago with whom they are now working. A disgraceful resolution by an Otago meeting was sent to the Speaker, who declined to allow the same to be laid upon the table. You will see the resolutipn in the paper 3. Mr. Wilson, C. 8., said the resolu- . tion ought to be thrown on the floor of the House and trampled upon by the members.
