UNITED STATES.

New York, May 10.* -A writ of habeas corpus having been granted in the case of Jefferson Davis, the President has directed the military commandant at Fortress Monroe to place the prisoner before- the Circuit Court of the United States for the District of Virginia, at Richmond, on the 13th inst., and to then and there state the cause of his imprisonment and detention. Mr. Davis, accompanied by his family, by the military commandant, and by two United States Marshals, will leave the Portress for Richmond to-morrow, and upon his arrival in that city he will be allowed quarters at the Spottswood Hotel, until the Court decides what shall be done with him. In the event of his being released from custody under the writ it is stated that he will be immediately re-arrested and placed on trial under the indictment for treason pending against him. Great anxiety was manifested by the people of Virginia respecting the probabilities of the trial of the prisoner, and the hope is • generally expressed that he will be released. The Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives are now in session, taking testimony, looking to the bringing in a bill of impeachment against the President. When Congress re-assembles a large number of witnesses from all, parts of the country have been summoned to appear before them, and everything that can be done to get up a o"ase against the /President, whether right or wrong, it is certain will be done. The Radicals are bound to get rid of him, if the thing can be in any way decently done. He is a stumbling block in their way, and great would be their rejoicing if they could only see him safely removed from his office. The trial of John H. Surratt, on the charge of being one of the accomplices in the assassination of President Lincoln will come off before the Criminal Court at Washington on the 27th inst., the counsel for and against the prisoner having agreed upon that day for his trial. Washington, May IT. The forthcoming trial ot Jefferson Davis appears to absorb everything else of public interest in this vicinity, His counsel will be in full force at Richmond on Monday next when he is produced before the United States district court there by the military authorities. It is reported that Chief Justice Chase will preside on the occasion and not Judge Underwood, as some feared would be the case.
