ARRIVAL OF THE PANAMA MAIL.
English News to May 10. The P.N.Z. and A.R.M. Co.'s s.s. Rakain, J, Harry Wright, Esq., Commander, from Panama, with mails, passengers, and cargo, arrived in Wellington on the 25th ult. at 4 a.m. Her dates are: — England, 11th May; New York, 11th May; California, 10th May. She brings in all 41 passengers and 232 packages of cargo. This vessel left Wellington on the Bth April, and arrived at Panama on the 4th May, after a rapid passage of 26 days. Two hours after leaving this port one of the seamen fell overboard. The ship cruised about for two hours between Barrett's Reef and the Heads with boats lowered in search but ■without success. During the passage from Panama the ship has encountered very adverse weather, the latter part very stormy, with heavy head -winds and seas, which has caused the delay in her arrival. On the 19th inst. the barometer fell as low as 28.91, and was succeeded by a tremendous gale from the westward, which has been continued from W. to S.W. up to making the land. The Rakaia passed Pitcairn's Island, but owing to the heavy surf on shore no communication was held with the inhabitants.
