The 12th Regiment, of which there are two detachments here, are under orders to embark from Napier for Auckland on the 2nd prox. Major- General Chute was on board the Lord Ashley, on his way to Wellington. The Waimabama Election. — A correspondent thus writes, under date 11th March : — " The election holden to-day was conducted in the usual orderly manner. John Weston Esq., our ex member, was proposed by Joseph Witherow Esq., and seconded by J. S. Buchanan Esq. We were not afflicted with long speeches, only short and temperate ones. There being no other candidate, Mr. Weston was reelected, and the eventful day closed with a most creditable dinner given by a gentleman who formerly graced a seat in the Council." Auckland. — Our usual files have reached ua by the "Lord Ashley," but we must defer extracts. There have been several failures in Auckland. On? — that of Mr. Cox, a solicicor, has caused great excitement, he having defrauded many persons of their all. Fighting on a desultory scale was still going on in Tauranga, but hopes were entertained that, upon the arrival of Major McDonnell, more decisive measures would be taken. Prize Firing. — The prize firing for the inland companies took place on Wednesday last, at Waipukurau. It blew a hard gale from south all day, and the men had no chance whatever of good shooting. The following are the names of the competitors, with the total score to each : — Witherow, 32 ; Buchanan junior, 25 ; Meddins, 23 ; Hollis, 21 ; fc Weston, 21 ; Chapman, 20 ; Mullender, 18; Claypole, 12; Goodwin 11. Several, whose names bad been sent in, did not attend. Philharmonic Society. — The next concert of this society (and last of the season) is announced for Thursday, 21st inst. The programme appears this morning.
