ROUTLEDGE, KENNEDY & Co., Auctioneers. Napier, Feb. 18th., 1867. 445 TO THE EDITOR OF THE HAWKE'S BAY HERALD. SIR,— You would oblige by inserting the following in answer to Mr. Argus, which appeared in the Times of 28th January, also the llth of February :■— It appears Mr. Argus has full control over that paper to print what he thinks proper and leave out the rest. Oa that ground I refuse to answer him again in that journal. Perhaps it would have been better to have treated his letter at first as anonymous, as it cannot be called anything else, when a man is ashamed to put his name to his hand-writing. But there is an old sajing, fools and children will be meddling; it appears so in tho present caso. I gave all the particulars how the accident happened, but Mr. Argus says his statement is not false j I say it is false; tho man was not drunk. A man is drunk when he does not know what he is doing, but this man knew perfectly well what he was doing ; he could walk or ride any distance, was quite able to keep liis saddle, and did not fall from his horse, but, owing to a ravine or gully in the road, the horse fell with him, Tho same accident would have happened to a teetotaller, The horso pitched on his head, and turned a complete somerset, so the man was bound to come off his saddlo, This proves Mr. Argus's statement false; if it had beon a whito man, Mr. Argus would not have troubled himself about it, but because it happens to be ono of tho dark race, Mr. Argus thinks ho has a pull, because I served him with drink ; but he ivill not get very fat by it. When I serve natives I do it in moderation aud use discretion, but not like where it ia said Mr. Argus reports from, namely, Waipawa, whore they aro served ; in any quantity and lay about the street drunk I by dozens. Why does not Ma. Argus look at homo first, but he' is like many moro — he can see the mote iv his neighbour's eye but cannot see the beam in his owu. Mr. Argus asks by what authority do I supply the native race with liquors ? I answer, by my own ; Ido not aßk Mr. Argus's permission or any one else's. Is there a publio house in this or any other province that does not supply tbem, little or much ? Not ono. Must I be an exception ? Certainly not ; but Ido not serve them as many timeß as they like to come during the day, but what I let them have is at one time and no more that day, There has been no attempt to hidp anything done by the barrel or bottle. This was "not done by either barrel or bottle, but a pure accident, caused by the fall of the horse. : It appears Mr. Argus measures out corn by his own bushel, but I think if ho casts his eye within himself, he will find he has not arrived at. perfection yet. If Mr. Argus wishes to know any more, I will meet him. at. any time, face to faoe; meantime, I leave him to grow larger and yet wiser. , W. GOODWIN.
