The Approaching Races. — Although money does not come in very rapidly for the races, we learn that the stewards have decided upou erecting a grand stand, to provide accommodation for 150 persons, and to have, as well, a steward's room and a large refreshment booth.

Sudden Deaths. — Two cases of awfully sudden death are recorded iv Qur columns this morning, iv addition to notifications which, shew that the unprecedented mortality among infants of tender age is unabated. One case is that of a young man who worked at his usual employment till noon on Tuesday last, and was dead on. Weduesday at 3. The other is a particularly lamentable occurance. Mr. T. W. Peet, who most creditably held the situation of bookbinder* iv this establishment, and whose amiability of character had eudeared him to all who knew him, lost his life on the evening of Thursday last under the mournful circumstances detailed elsewhere. He left work at 6 o'clock in good health and spirits ; and at |-past 7he was a corpse. The poor fellow, siuce his arrival iv Napier, has been saving his earnings to pay off a debt he owed in Auckland, so as to clear a small property he held there. He had nearly accomplished this, and was looking forward to being speedily joined in Napier by a wife and children to whom he was tenderly attached, when he was suddenly cut off.. The news of the sad event will fall with crushing force, we fear, upon the unhappy widow aud orphans.

English Mail. — Our readers will remember that the English mail closes on Wednesday next, the 13th inst., two days earlier than usual.

This Day Mr. Stuart will sell cattle at the Meanee ; and Mr. Lyndon will hold his monthly sale of merchandise. — See advertisements.

Novel Arrival. — Last evening a large war canoe, laden with melons and peaches, arrived from the Wairoa. She left Wairoa Heads at 9 a.m. yesterday and came in at 6 p.m. The name of the canoe is Ahikokako, and it was brought down by Hamana Taepa and a crew of seven natives. It is intended, we believe, as a present for Tareha.

Cricket is likely to be an institution amongst us, a new club having been formed and a very liberal subscription list got up, with the view of having a regular cricket ground and the other adjuncts.

Resident Magistrate's Court. — Yesterday, upon the application of Major Green, Mr. John Buchanan wa3 ordered by the Bench, which consisted of Messrs. Curling, Cooper, and Tiffen, to find sureties to keep thepeace for six months, himself in £30 and two sureties in £15 each. The information arose out of an application fora horse made in connection with the affairs of Mr. France, and words which were then used by the de-? fendant. The latter gave notice of appeal, and, the seven day's notice required having been waived by the other side, the case will come on for hearing before His Honor the Judge, before his r3turn to Wellington. Under such circumstances we do not feel warranted in placing the details before the public.

The Concert on Monday will be very largely attended, not merely on account of the rich musical treat in course of preparation, but because of this occasion being probably the last upon which the congregation, and residents generally, will have an opportunity of meeting in public the Rev. P. Barclay, who, after laboring amongst us for a period of nearly eight years, will take his departure foi*the Mother Country in course of next week. It will be seen that His Honor the Judge has very kindly agreed to preside, and to present to Mr. Barclay the farewell address.
