His Excellency the Governor held a levee on Friday 18th ihst., at the Provincial Council Chamber, Christchurch. At about 1.30 p.m., the Governor, attended by his suite and the Hon. Major Richardson, Major Gray, and the four Maori chiefs, entered the hall. A guard of honour consisting of some members of the Engineer company under the command of Lieut. Lean, was stationed in the corridor. His Excellency was received by his Honor the Superintendent and the members of the Executive, the Lord Bishop of the Diocese, the Revs. C. Fraser and T. Buddie, the Speaker of the Provincial Council, Col. White, Dr. Haast, Messrs. Wilkin, Hamilton, Calvert, Dobson, FitzGerald, C. C. Bowen, W. Wilson, J. C. Wilson, C. B. The presentations were very numerous. His Excellency has favoured Mr. Munday, of Christchurch, with a sitting for the purpose of having his portrait photographed. Dunedin. — The election of a member of the House of Representatives for the city of Dunedin took place on Saturday last. There was little or no excitement. The poll was : — Reynolds, 333 ; Graft, 52. Stamps. — The lawyers have had a meeting in Wellington, at the instigation of the banks, to prepare an appeal to the Supreme Court <i.i the Stamp Act. The point is, whether bills drawn out of the colony before the Ist of Jauuary and accepted in the colony after that date are required to be stamped. Canterbury Tunnel. — Mr. Kennard, who is now on a visit to Canterbury, visited the tunnel on Thursday last, and saw the cutting to advantage, as it was lighted for , the occasion with the magnesium light.
