The Hawke's Bay Hearld. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1865. AUCKLAND AND HAWKE'S BAY.

Under this beading we lately extracted an article from the Southern Cross, the writer of

which took th? GbVemjaietifeof this province to , ; task for having lately engaged some 40 laborers out of the hundreds of Unemployed who are to ,be found in the streets of Auckland, without having previously referred the name of each person to the Superintendent's office, in order ; to make certain that he had not been brought out at the expense of that province, In other words, labor, which we are assured, abounds in Auckland, cannot be engaged for another province without going through a pro- , cess which would be equivalent to referring the matter to the circumlocution office. If the passages of those people really have been paid -. :j by the Province of Auckland, which they all deny, surely it is better they should take temporary employment in Hawke's Bay, than starve in the streets of Auckland, or take their departure for the West Coast gold fields. Not long ago, it will be remembered, the:,Aucklanders had another growl at our going into their labor market, for military settlers ; but > strange encmgh, those very settlers are now shedding their blood within the territory ., of, Auckland, in defence of the neglected out- ■? settlers of that province. . „ Our contemporary is facetious upon the sub- /. ject of the proposed annexation of part of the East Coast to this province. That annexation, we may observe, was, proposed by the : residents ■. ■ ' ; themselves, who may surely be permitted to have something to say on the subject of their neglected state, and what seems to them the only remedy open to. them. The thirst for fresh territory would seem rather to have its origin amongst our northern friends, whose share of the spoil next session, as per understanding said to have been, arrived at in this, is to be nothing less than the Province of Taranaki! ";■•.* .-.. Some facetious remarks are also made upon the supposed wish of the settlers of Hawke's Bay to increase the number of their, sheep runs. It so happens they are quarrelled with in this instance for seeking to add, not to their flocks, but to their population ; while the local [ Government, in making every exertion in the * way of procuring land suited for purposes of bonafide settlement, have shown their desire to have the province thickly peopled. The time will doubtless come, and the sooner the better, when sheep will have to give way to men— when the plough will pass over land now occupied for pastoral purposes only. . But in the j mean time an export of £150,000 per annum for wool and stock, is not. a thing to be despised ; possibly, indeed, it is envied by out Auckland brethren.
