Panama Boats calling at Tahiti.— Mr. Wilkens, a gentleman deputed by the French Government to come to New Zealand for the purpose of asccrtaining-.whetber arrangements can be made to get the Panama steamers to call at Tahiti, was a passenger by the s.s. Tararua, from Sydney, on Sunday last, and has had interviews with Captaia Vine Hall, the Manager of the P.N.Z. & A.R.M. Company and the Postal Committee, in connection with the matter. He was the bearer of letters toHis Excellency Sir George Grey from M. le Comte de la Ronciere, the Governor of Tahiti, and also to Captaia Vine Hall. We understand that the substance of the proposal is that the boats should call at Tahiti going and coming, and for this the Government were prepared to pay the sum of £4,000 annually. Mr. Wilkens, having communicated with Captain Hall, was referred to the Postal Committee then sitting, and we believe that he was then requested to submit the proposal in writing to the Government of this Colony. From what we can learn with reference to this subject, the steamers calling at Tahiti would confer many conveniences upon travellers^ not the least of which would be that by that means a half-way resting place would be obtained, and travellers would be enabled to get on shore for the purposes of recreation.-— Advertise?', Oct. 25. Majok Von Tempsky. — This officer, accompanied by some thirty men belonging to his corps, left last night in the s.s. Wanganui, for Wanganui, where he will proceed to organise an . irregular corps of Europeans and Maoriea. We understand that Captain Pilmer, of the Wellington Rifle Volunteers, has obtained a commission, and accompanies Major Von Tempsky's expedition. — N. Z. Advertiser, Oct. 23. The New Attorney-General. — It will be seen on reference to our Parliamentary report that the Hon. Mr. Prendcrgast, of Otago, one of the members of the Legislative Council, has accepted the office of Attorney- General in Mr. Stafford's Ministry. Mr. Prendergast is well known to be one of the ablest legal practitioners in the Colony, and we doubt not he will render good service to the State in his new position. — iV. Z. Advertiser, Oct. 23. Latest from Taranaki and Wanganui.-— Captain Lowe, of the s.s. Wanganui, which vessel ai'rived here on Saturday night, reports that on Friday last an engagement took place between General Waddy's troops at Patea and the Maories, in which two soldiers were killed and five wounded. On the same day, at Taranaki, a skirmish took place between 20 Volunteers (mounted) and the rebels ; two troopers were wounded, but it is not known how many Maories were killed or wounded.
