THE CONFISCATED LAND.
In the House of Commons, on the 23rd March, Mr. Kekewich asked the Under Secretary of State for War whether the commanding officers of the various corps iv New Zealand had preferred any claims : to the proceeds arising from the sale of lauds captured from the enemy ; aud whether the Government had auy inten- '. tion of paying them a part of those proceeds as prize-money ? — The Marquis of Hartington said it was a fact that an ap- : plication had been made by some of the troops in New Zealand for a share of the prize-money that would arise from the sale of the lauds captured by the troops.
But he was not aware of any circumstances under which laud captured by military forces had been considered convertible into prize-money. (Hear, hear.) Therefore, if any recommendation to such effect came from the colony, it would not be complied with. THE ATLANTIC CABLE. The Great Eastern is to sail with the uew. telegraphic cable, from Valencia (Ireland), about May 1, and may be expected at Heart's Content, Trinity Bay> by the middle of the month.
