LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
- Sir, — The decision of the Bench qf Magis-* • trates with respect to the licenses is just one of f those mistakes which eventually tend to rectify ' the government of the body pobtic. ; The Bench consisted of some who were paid ; and some who were not paid. It is hot possi- ■ ble that a man shoidd be paid exactly the ) worth of his services : some may receive more £ some less than they deserve ; but when a man s receives nothing, it is not an irrational conclusion i to come to that he gets his full value. This r idea of the great unpaid is gradually losing
I ground in England. A" man is no mor > -born to be a maker oi laws (that is goo i laws) than he is born to be a watch i maker : he may certainly have great naturfi aptitudes, but. without the needful study am previous apprenticeship his work in either cas will not meet with the approval ofthe public. In this particular instance the general feelinj :is hot so much against the gentlemen whe acting to the best of their knowledge, hay' made a mistake, — as against the system whicl has placed the said gentlemen in such a posi tion as to enable them to make such a mistake What is worth having is worth paying for, and wliat is got for nothing is often dear at th< price. Yours, Pjbter Simple.
