France Threatened with Privateers. — The correspondent of the Shipping Gazette at i Nantes writes : — " Not a little commotion has been caused here by the news, contained in letters from New York, that President Jaurez, of Mexico, intends to issue letters of marque against Prance, and that three privateers are being fitted out in United States ports for the purpose of attacking French ships, and particularly the large steamers of the Transatlantic Company, which ply between St Nazaire and Vera Cruz. But the belief among reflecting persons is that the United States Government can hardly be so imprudent as to run the risk of coming into collision with France by tolerating anything of the kind. If, however, privateering should be attempted, the Ministry of Marine at Paris is understood to have already taken measures for very energetic action." " Mr. Smith," said the counsel, " you say you once officiated in a pulpit— do you mean that you preached ?" " No, sir; I held the candle for a man who did." — " Ah, the court understood' you differently. They supposed that the discourse came from you."— "No, sir; I only throwed a light on it." Why was Hamlet so courageous in addressing his father's ghost? Because he was not particular to a shade. " Oh, dear, Mr. S., you jest when you say my baby is the handsomest you ever saw ; you must be soft soaping. " Well, madam," returned the blunt old gentleman. " I think it needs soap of some kind." He must be h strong general who can storm and carry a fortress. An Unpublished Despatch.— lt is reported (pays the New Zealander) that His Excellency Sir George Grey received a despatch by last mail, in reply to a requisition of Sir Duncan Cameron for four regiments for service in New Zealand. The reply of the Secretary of State for. the Colonies is said to have been a recommendation to raise the regiments in the colony I We give the rumor for what it is worth.
