The Court was opened on Monday before His Honor Mr. Justice Johnston. The Grand Jury, consisting of Messrs. James Anderson (foreman), S. Begg, S. G. Brandon, J. B. Brathwaite, Alexander Browne, J. Buchauan, J. Chambers, G. T. Fannin, M. Fitzgerald, Alex. Irvine, V. Janisch, A. Kennedy, J. G. Kinross, W. Maltby, Win. Miller, Thomas Powdrell, James Reynolds, J. Rhodes, Wni. Rich, G. E. G. Richardson, J. M. Stuart, F.Sutton, H. S. Tiffen, E. Tuke,— having been sworn, — The Sheriff presented His Honor with a pair of white gloves. His Honor said that, Mr. Sheriff having, in pursuance of an ancient custom, which he was glad to see observed, indicated that there was no criminal business before the Court, he was very happy to have to congratulate the Province upon the fact that this was the second time he had visited Napier without a criminal case having been presented for trial. His Honor then addressed the Grand Jury at some length, touching upon the state of the Colony, and upon the social improvement perceptible in the Province, and concluded with a brief resume of Acts of the past session of the Assembly having reference to the administration of justice. [No accommodation having been provided for the press, we are unable to do justice to His Honor's address, and therefore refrain from reporting it.] No indictment having been presented to the Grand Jury, the Court then adjourned. A minor jury sittings will take place to-morrow.
