Peter Coleman was brought up in custody charged with stealing five shirts and a towel the property of George Samson of the Brigantino Pilot, and also one shirt, the property of Donald Campbell of the same vessel. George Samson said, I am an ordinary seaman on board the Pilot. I arrived in Napier on the 9th inst. — About 12 o'clock last Saturday night, T missed the shirts in question ; they had been saht to me in the afternoon.by the washerwoman. — I laid them on the bed and when I came back to the vessel I missed them. I told the steward of it, and we searched everywhere, and, could not find them. I saw nothing of them until I saw them in the hands of J tlie-police, when I identified them as my property. The shirts now; in court are the shirts I lost. Donald Campbell gave similar evidence as to the> shirt which was his property. Edward Howell said. I am a policeman. About half past 12 o'clock yesterday morning I, apprehended the prisoner for being drunk. I took him to the IpcbVup^when, on searching him, I found the shirts-produced inside his blue shirt. I had suspicion, that they were stolen property, and .reported the matter to Corporal Evans.
