LICENSING MEETING, WAIPAWA.
The usual annual meetingof magistrates wasb'eld at the court-house, Waipawa, on the 10th inst., for the purpose of receiving applications for the renewal of old or the issue of new publican's licenses in the inland districts for 1864. The magistrates present were — G. S. Cooper, Esq., R.M., (Chairman,) C. Lambert, P. Russell, and A. St. C. Inglis, Esquires, J.P.'s. There were no new applications ; those for renewal were— - John Rose, ' Waipawa Hotel,' Waipawa T. B. Smith, 'Bushman's Arms,' Waipawa W. Goodwin, ' Tavistock Hotel,' Waipukurau T. Couper, 'Pearson Hotel,' Wallingford T. Lamb, Porangahau J. Herbert, Wainui J. J. Kelly, (late J. Eobjohns), 'Patangata Hotel,' Patangata J. Davis, Ngawhakatatara W. Ellingham, 'The Two Brothers,' Poukawa J. Ford, 'Kaikoura Hotel,' Kaikcmra —The above applications were all recommended; the only refusal being that of Susan Ifo'wells, late W. Howells, ' Travellers' Rest,' Waipawa)—; a special condition of the renewal being that on Sundays the houses are to be closed, except be : tween the hours of 1 and 3 p.m., and 6 and 8 p.m. The Bench informed the applicants that, in case of complaints being made against any house, to the effect that the servants of the neighbouring residents are- permitted to remain on the premises drinking, the application for renewal of license would be refused. Also, that' the law on the subject of closing their houses ori Sundaya would .be £igoj--ou§ly unforced);,, and'that, although nd conviction may be recQr^d,aga^s]|L.,thesß,,a rei presentation from the neighbours will' be dorisij* dered sufficient by the Bench to warrant thetiji in refusing to recommend the license for renewal.
