HAWKE'S BAY HERALD WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1863. THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE PROVINCE.

The agitation which resulted in the formation of Hawke's Bay into a separate j province — the heartburnings with Wei- j lington, the unfulfilled promises of the Superintendent of that province, the public meetings, the petitions — are yet so fresh in our memory that its fifth anniversary has almost taken us by surprise. Yet so it is : Hawke's Bay, having been declared a separate province on the Ist November, 1858, has just completed the fifth year of its separate political existence. It would be interesting to trace, step by step, the means by which separation was achieved. If we went further and traced the public career of the new province, many instructive lessons might be learned — many sources of regret be doubtless revealed. At present, however, we have but to regard separation in one aspect — that of joyful freedom from, the trammels of Welling •ion7"Wd to" participate in the general rejeiciugs with which the present anniversary has been celebrated. The annual festivities have this year partaken of a new character, the natural consequence of the population having recently been instructed in the use of fire-arms. Rifle matches have consequently formed the chief amusement. The weather during both auuiversary days — Monday and Tuesday — has been delightful ; and the holidays have proved a source of universal enjoyment. The advertised match came off" at 10 o'clock on Monday morning — the charge of the firing having beeu kindly undertaken by Capt. Withers. The entrance fee was ten shillings, including which, the amount available for prizes was £23 10s., divided as follows: — first prize, £11 155., second, £7 16s. Bd., third, £3 18s. 4d. We subjoin the result of the firmg — premising, however, that the shots were scored on the old principle — the hits not being added to the poiuts. The distauce was 200 yards, and the number of rounds, 6: —

— The first prize was accordingly awarded to Blake, and the second to Williams. For the third, Chapinau and Badley being a "tie," had three shots a-piece to decide the winner, resulting as follows: — P. Badley... ".. 221 5 . . F. M. Chapman 002 2 — Badley, in consequence, taking the third prize. A sweepstakes of fifteeu crowns was then shot for at 250 yards, Mr Laraont proving to have the highest score. Three other matches, which had been hastily arranged at a meeting on Friday

night, were announced for the afternoon. Iv these, the entrance money was fixed at half-a-crown ; the method of scoring to be — 4 points for a bull's eye, 3 for a centre, 2 for an outer ; the three winners in, the match of the morning to be excluded. The first of the three was at 250 yards range ; five rounds to be fired ; one prize, to be one half the subscriptions received and the entire of the entrance money for the match. It came off with the following result : —

— It was therefore a "tie" between Garry and Jeffares. The extra shots decided in favor of the latter. The second. match was at 200 yards range ; four rounds to be fired ; one prize, to be one-third of the subscriptions received and the whole of the entrance moneys for the match. The winner of the previous match to be excluded, as well as any others who might have scored more than 11 points. The following is the score : —

— Lucas being in this case the fortunate man. The afternoon, being now well advanced, the third match was deferred till the following day. It was at 150 yards range ; four rounds to be fired ; one prize, to be one-sixth of the subscriptions received and the whole of the entrance moneys for the match. Those excluded who were not allowed to compete in the second match, as well as those who, iv it, scored, above nine . points. It came off yesterday morning, with* the" following result : : —

— Mr. Irvine being the winner of this lot. The ammunition for the three matches was supplied for the most part by Capt. Buchanan ; and several of the persons who entered have asked us publicly to acknow- 1 ledge his liberality in this respect.. , The afternoon, was chiefly devoted to rural sports;, for which purpose a sub*, scription had been made in course of the morning at the instance of Capt. Curling,, who kindly superintended the proceedings;., but the impromptu, character of the ,ar» rangements prevented them from being of the best. A foot r&ce for IQO yardsr

was hotly contested by two men of the 14th, Glynn coming in winner. A similar race for 400 yards was won by Daly (14th), another soldier making a pretty second ; a Maori who entered was nowhere. "Hop, step, and jump" was won by Merry (14th), who also took the prize for the running jump, beating Harvey. Jumping in sacks was won by Glynn, beating Roberts and Hague. In wrestling, Mr. John Baty proved himself the champion. Putting the stone was won by Cluny (14th) ; foot race (heel and toe) by Glynn ; aud the long jump, by Merry, without contest. Some of the proceedings afforded much amusement, particularly a running match between Messrs. Howse and Reardou for 100 yards, which was won easily by the latter. A horse race on the Beach varied the afternoon's amusement. Distance, one mile. Four horses started. Captain Hunter's chestnut colt " Strike a Light" took the lead, but was collared at the half distance by "Rataplan," a two-year old colt belongto Mr. Henry Parker, which took and kept the lead for the remainder of the mile — the chestnut a good second and a horse belonging to Lieut. Butler well up as third.
