To the Editor of the Hawke's Bay Herald. Sir — I have to beg you to allow me space in your valuable paper for a few remarks on the appointment of district officials by the Crown, and the indiscriminate, without due consideration of their fitness, of their former fulfilments of the necessary duties, or colonial experience. Sir. I maintain that there has been a total want of discrimination in those selections. People have been appointed who have been place hunting ' for a few days ' — persons, indeed, with no experience ; and men who could say to the natives ; give me back the hairs of my head, and I will give you back your land,' have been utterly ignored. Looking at the history of this district retrospectively, we could hardly have imagined otherwise than that they would have committed those blunders, whicli inevitably follow where the pet system has been palpably and tangibly carried out. Nevertheless, we express surprise at the participation of the General Government in such courses, so easily to be perceived. And we see those public servants, some with uniforms, some without, and others again talking about what they are going to get. They surely don't think this sort of thing is going to last. They seem to have forgotten that a breath has placed them, a breath may displace them. Sir, I must add, before finishing, these few lines, that if the district was on wheels during Mr. FitzGerald's reign, it appears to have reached its climax now. Some of your disinterested readers, upon perusal of this, will say. ' poor fellow, disappointed no doubt ;' but lam anticipating his kiud remarks. I am, &c, A Genti#emaji going South. ;
