HAWKE'S BAY HERALD TUESDAY, DECEMBER. 30, 1862.

THE SUPERINTENDED CV. Although Capt. Carter will hold the reins of government until the first meeting of the new Council, his term of office may be considered as virtually at an end. During the existence of that term his official acts have been freely, and, in some instances we regret to say, coarsely criticised ; but it must be a proud reflection to him that, while charges of want of energy and want of capacity have been levelled at him — many of which, no doubt, in ignorance of cognate circumstances — no accusation — not even a whisper, has ever been raised against the integrity of his government. His policy may, in some respects, have been of a vacillating character ; but, like the policy of Mr. Robert Graham of Auckland, it has been one of honesty. Wd learn that, in response to a very general invitation, Mr. Donald McLean has intimated that, should such be the

wish of the Council, he will be willing to accept the office of Superintendent. Believing as we do that Mr. McLean is preeminently the man to take the helm of affairs at the present juncture, we hail the announcement with great satisfaction. It is indeed a fortunate thing for the province that a gentleman of Mr. McLean's reputation — more especially of his knowledge of native language and characteris able at this time to give it his services. Capt. Carter, who might, under other circumstances, have been open to resume office, will not enter the field against Mr. McLean ; so that no obstacle, so far as can now be seen, interposes to the unanimous election of that gentleman.
