To the Editor of the Hawtes Bay Herald. Sib, — Allow me to ask you whether the new Native Land Bill authorises the missionaries to turn landjobbers or assistants thereto, as I hear that the Eev. Samuel Williams lately has either been leasing, or helping another to lease, a run over the head of one of our old settlers without saying a word to him as to his intentions ; and yet he can presume to say that he is friendly ■with this settler. I know myself that this rev. gentleman was loudest in condemning the conduct of others for trying to get a part of Mr. St. Hill's run some time ago, and they did not know that anyone had taken it from the natives. Is it not a truly Christian act to accept a man's hospitality and then to take away his living from him? Where would the country be without the sheep farmers ? I suppose the missionaries would have it and be as in former times, like little kings. Let me ask you, Mr. Editor, do you call this a straightforward action of this very upright man, or do not you think it would have looked better if he and his amiable companion had gone and turned this settler out of his house altogether as a native told me the other day that they wanted the natives to turn him off and lease them the whole of the run, but they declined. Hoping to know the public opinion of this transaction, believe me, Yours truly, Mangamaibi.
