To (he Editor of the Hcmke's Bay Herald. Sib, — You will greatly oblige me by correcting ■what has been either an error on the part of your reporter or a mis-print. It is as regards a statement made by me on the 6th October before Mr. Justice Johnston. Your paper states that I said I owed no man a penny ; I did not say that, neither did I make use of any words that could be construed to that effect. I stated that the debt for which I was incarcerated was unjust, as it had been previously paid, or words to that effect. I could not consistently with truth say that I owed nothing to any man, and I am prepared to swear that I did not say so, and, if required, can prove it. Therefore, I must beg of you to contradict it, as it might be the means of involving me in serious difficulties if not contradicted. I am, &c, A. J. DEVERETJX. Napier Gaol, October 14, 1862. P.S. — I also said that I did not owe the man a penny, — that might have been where the mistake originated. There is also a mistake in the name. A. J. D.
