To tee Electors op Ha wee's Bay, ( Per favor of the Haw~k£s Bay Herald. ) Feliow-SettliEKS, — I again address you in, I trust, not the vain hope of arousing your attention to the important duty you will presently be called upon to discharge, in the choice of a representative to support and defend your interests in the General Assembly. I need scarcely to remind a sagacious community that their interests require that the individual selected to fight their battle, under the peculiar circumstances of this province, should be a person of more than ordinary ability and of the greatest discretion ;' a man of sound sense and of unflinching integrity 5 one capable of a fair and equitable adjustment of conflicting claims, and pledged to no extreme course. The apathy hitherto exhibited on this most important subject by the general body of electors is truly marvellous. Doubtless the individual chosen will have a most arduous and "difficult task imposed upon him ; one, indeed, from which most men of modest merit would shrink from undertaking, leaving the course open to some brazen-faced bullet-headed man, too thick skulled even to perceive the difficulties that beset his path ; and who, being impelled by self-esteem and empty vanity, would seize with avidity the chance of advancing his self-importance and private interests. Brother Electors, deceive not yourselves, nor be deceived by impudent pretension. It is your business to find the right man for this critical occasion. Judge of men by their antecedents. A man who judiciously conducts his private affairs ; whose honor is unimpeachable ; and whose mental gifts are beyond question, is the man you want. No such, man will thrust himself forward, he must be sooght. That there are several such within our province, I doubt not : it remains with you to seek them. No time must be lost ; be up and doing ; use your own good sense ; and be not misled by the specious sophistry of greedy selfishness thinly veiled by empty pretensions of public patriotism. . "By their fruit shall ye know them." Farewell, — from your friend, Rttsticxtb Pbimtxs. Napier, April 13, 1860.
