•Resident Magistrate's Court.— On the loth instant two boys were sentenced to be locked •up for 6 hours for stealing fruit from the garden H. S. TiffenEsq. McKinnon v. Gason. Suit for .£7 10s., 12 weeks rent of a cottage on the Spit. Judgment for defendant with costs. March 16. — .McManusx. Smith, debt, £2 2s. 9d. A set-off was filed, aad judgment given for 18s. 9d. Win' .ter v. Moore, (before John Curling and John Tucker Esquires, J.P.) The plaintiff, master of the schooner ' Will Watch ' charged the defendant, cook and steward on board the said vessel, with desertion. The offence was proved, and the defendant sentenced to four weeks' imprisonment with hard labour ; also to forfeit wages due and clothing left on board. The case was represented as one ■of an aggravated character, inasmuch as the vessel was nearly lost through being short handed. The -defendant pleaded that the master had assaulted him on board, and that he went ashore to get justice. Land Sale. — Our notice, in last week's issue, -of the public sale of the land of Havelock, conclu-•-ded with the remark that doubtless the particulars ■would be published some time or other. The meaning of these words, which does not seem to .have been understood, is simply this, that land and other returns, to which the public look forward with curiosity, are very seldom published till they are long oxit of date. The fact is-Jnoticed in ■ all quarters. It is now the 24th of March, and * -nothing whatever ha 3 been done towards issuing the land returns for February, or the customs .returns for the quarter ended 31st Dec. last. If they are worth publicity at all, the public should have them in time. Fatal Accidekt. — On the 11th instant a man named John Jones lost his life in the Mohaka river under the following circumstances. He was one of the crew of the schooner " Gripsey," owned by Messrs. Biddeil and Stapleton. The vessel was under weigh, and wqs about to bring up again ; the deceased was told to lower the jib, and in catching hold of the " down-haul" for that purpose, made a false movement and staggered overboard. His mate saw him pass the waist of the vessel, and reached out to try and seize him, but ineffectually. The vessel being under weigh at the time, nothing mere could be done, and the deceased was not seen olive afterwards. The residents about constituted themselves into a jury — the coroner's jurisdiction not extending so i'ar — and returned a verdict of "accidentally drowned.' Registration. — We remind our leaders that next week is all the time now left for the purpose of registration during the present year. We do no.t think that any one has to be convinced of the importance of attending to this ; but we believe that many are prone to procastination, and require to be reminded, of what is a duty to themselyes and to the province. ■ The Natives. — Rumours have been rife during the past week of assaults committed by the natives at,Waipawa. We learn on good authority that such rumours are without foundation — nothing having occurred beyond one of the 'runanga' meetings, — conducted quietly — which are now bo common throughout the province. Fieb. — Last night about ten o'clock, the stables occupied by Mr. R. Cameron,, were discovered to be on fire, and in a few minutes were totally destroyed.
