MILITARY DETACHMENT AT NAPIER

Colonial Secretary's Office, Auckland, March 10, 1860. Sir, — In reply to your letter of the 3rd instant, enclosing a resolution of the Provincial Council of the Province of Hawke's Bay, remonstrating against the withdrawal of any portion of the troops stationed at Napier, I have the honor to inform you that the question of removing the troops from Napier has not been entertained by the government, nor is such a step likely, save in the case of such an emergency as would require ■the presence of every bayonet at. some particular place. The Governor is at present absent at Taranaki, where the present position of affaira necessitates the presence of a considerable armed force. On His Excellency's return the subject of your Honor's letter will be brought under his notice.

No communication, as to the cases of native aggression referred to by your Honor, [has been received from the District Land Purchase Commissioner, but that officer has been written to on the subject by this mail. I have, &c, E. W. STAFFORD. His Honor the Superintendent of the Province of Hawke's Bay.
