MECHANIC'S INSTITUTE.

On Thursday evening the 3rd inst., a public meeting was held at Marshall's Hotel, pursuant to advertisement, to consider the necessity of measures being taken for the establishment of a Mechanic's Institute in the Town of Napier — Capt. J. Curling in the chair. The advertisement convening the meeting having been read, the chairman addressed the meeting in an speech which we regret being unable to report at length. He referred to the progress that had been made in this Province in all inateaial pursuits, and trusted that the same energy which had led to this would be displayed in providing for the intellectual wants of the inhabitants. After referring to the success of similar Institutions elsewhere, he called upon the inhabitants, absent as well as present, to assist in the proposed work ; and if they did so with good will, he did not entertain a doubt of the success of the undertaking. 1. It was then moved by Mr. Tiffen, seconded by Mr. Unmack, and carried unanimously : — "That in the opinion of this meeting it is desirable to establish a Mechanic's Institute and public Reading Boom, for the benefit of the inhabitants of the Province of Hawke's Bay." 2. It was moved bj Mr. Unmaok, seconded by Mr. J. N. Wilson, and carried unanimously : — "That a committee be appointed to frame the rules and regulations adapted for the purpose." 3. It was moved by Mr. Fannin, seconded by Mr. Triphook, and carried unanimously : — "That this meeting clo now proceed to elect 14 members to form a Committee with power to add to theirnumber." [ For list of committee see advertisement.] 4. It was moved by Mr. Unmack, seconded by Mr. Wright, and carried unanimously : — "That H. S. Tiffen Esq., be requested to act as Treasurer." 5. It was moved by Mr. Tiffen, seconded by Mr. G-arry, and carried unanimously : — " That Mr. J. IST. Wilson be requested to act as Honorary Secretary." 6. It was moved by Mr. Tiffen, seconded by Mr. Kelly, and carried unanimously : — "That the committee be authorised to collect subscriptions and donations, and this meeting do adjourn to the evening of the 15 th December next, to report the amount of subscriptions received and the steps taken by them." 7. It was moved by Mr. Wm. Sinith, seconded by Mr. Unmack, and carried unanimously : — "That no maximum be fixed for the honorary donations." 8. It was moved by Mr. Tripbook, seconded by Mr. Anderson, and carried unauimously ; — • "That the annual subscription be one pound.
