AEEIYAL OF THE SEPTEMBER MAILS

The arrival of the "Lucy James," on Tuesday afternoon, brought us the September English Mail, received in Wellington on Friday night by the steam ship ''Wonga Wonga." The mail steamer "Columbian" arrived in Melbourne on the 18th ult., and brings news to the 25th Sept., the "Simla," bound for India, having overtaken the "Columbian" at sea.

The "Wonga Wonga," the first of the line of steamers between Melbouri.e and Wellington, with his Honor the Superintendent on board, made a fine run of 6 days — a rapidity of which, through the smart passage of the ''Lucy James," we derive the full benefit, the mail having reached Napier on the tenth day from Melbourne !

We regret that, to meet the views of correspondents, who will not remember that our space is limited, and our mechanical means, small, we are obliged to omit nearly the whole of the news received by this opportunity.

It' is seldom that a budget of European intelligence, extending over a period cf nearly five weeks, has been so wholly unimportant. It comprises no political news with the exception of the formal abdication of the India House by the Company, and transfer of the East to Queen Victoria and her Ministers.

The London wool sales closed on 24th August, an advance having been maintained on all sorts since the termination of the May sales.

The most important item of intelligence refers to the new arrangements contemplated by the English Government for the Australian mail service. The tenders for the new contract "were to be received, on the sth of October. An intimation was attached to the Government notice, \ihat it was the intention shortly to call for tenders for a second monthly service via Panama. A further extension of two months has, been made of the present arrangements with the R. M. Company to carry the mails up to February next. '
