SELECT POETRY. TO MY WIFE On re-visiting my Native Home By Alexander Dew ah. Now have 1 reached my native vale ! And gaze on scenes of infancy,-— The hreezes pure the sense regnle, And brace with healthful buoyancy. The mountains high surround me now ! On every Bide they meet the view ; To me they lift their friendly brow, In act our friendship to renew ! Sublimely beautiful to see, Yet, from them all, I turn to thee. Mine eye upon those mighty hills Delights to linger while it may ; The sight my heart with gladness fills, And turns reluctantly away. The woodlands in their gay attire, Are vocal with the warbling throng Of feathered tribes, whose merry choir Ne'er cense, nor pause, the wholo day long, How sweet their artless minstrelsy Yet, from it all, I turn to thee ! The valleys, fringed with gorse and broom, In streaming gold profusely gay, — The linnets nestle 'neatfr'the bloom, — And, singing, cheer' the lingering day. The wild flowers blushing at my feet Look up with blessings in their smile, Filling the air wiih odours sweet, — And all my tedious way beguile, Though full of beauty, life, and glee, Yet, from them all, I turn to ihee. My father's cot at length appears, Deep in a narrow lonely vale, Where scarce a shrub or tree appears Its head to screen it from the gale. A silver stream flows past the door, Eed by a thousand mountain rills, Affording all the year a store Of water for his noisy mills : Once full of interest to me, Now, from them all, I turn to thee. Mv father meets me,— and the tears "Of earnest joy start to his eye,— I spoke, — we had not met for years, — His quivering lips made no reply, A moment's pause, — we speech attained,— And one pathetic greeting o'er, — Another ere the house we gained. My heart leapt to my mouth once more My honiewas reached, but, lacking thee, ' Ahomeless home it seemed to me. To thee, to thee, my dearest part, My soul with rapt emotion turns ; Bright on the altar of this heart Love's incense fire for ever burns, Making the fairest scenes to me, Become of interest blank and void ; For, wanting thee though bright they be, Their beauty is but half enjoyed, For dearer far*than light or life f> Art thou, my own, my wedded wife.
