GRAMOPHONE RECITAL
MUSIC TEACHERS ENTERTAINED. HAWERA: ASSOCIATION. Members of the Hawera Music Teachers’ Association were entertaintainecl on Thursday night at a gramophone recital presented by Mr L. 0. Hooker in the Carlton tea rooms. A comprehensive, series of recordings, representative of the work of the world’s leading artists, was greatly- appreciated. , ■ Before the recital commenced Mr Hooker gave a short address on nVusic and its effect on listeners, from the layman’s point of view. Air H. Ackroyd presided and at the close of the recital moved a vote of thanks .to Air Hooker, the motion being carried by acclamation.
The following numbers were presented : Violin ooncerto an D Major, Op. 35 (Tschaikowsky), Mischa Allman with the London Symphony Orchestra : Russian songs, “The Song ot the Volga Boatman,” and “Monotonously Rings the Little Bell,” the Don Cos-: sack choir; pianoforte solo. Ballade in A Flat (Chopin), Cortot; bass solo, “La Calunnia e an Venticello,” Theodore Chaliapin; piano solo, sonata in F Major, Op. Id (Beethoven), Arthur Schnabel; “Soldiers Chorus” from 11 Tmvatore, Bruno Carmasse and chorus; piano solo, waltzes an D Flat Major and G< Flat Major (Chopin), Pachmann; excerpt from “The Crucifixion” (Stainer), Trinity Church Choir, London, soloist Richard Crooks; quartette in F Major, Budapest String Quartette. ,
