Hawera Festival of Music, Elocution apd Dancing

RECORD ENTRIES RECEIVED FIRST SESSIONS ON MONDAY Four halls have been engaged for the Hawera competitions festival next week in order to cope with the exceptionally large entries in all three sections of music, elocution and dancing. As in the past, the Opera House will he occupied for the whole season of morning, afternoon and evening sessions from Monday morning at 10 o’clock until the grand finale on Friday night. The Foresters’ Hall will be occupied for five days (mornings and afternoons), the Scout Hall on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (mornings only) and St. John s Ha on Monday and Tuesday (mornings and afternoons). The programme for all three sessions on Monday will he as follows :■ MORNING Opera House. —Recitation in character, girls 13 and under 16 years; dialogue in costume, boys or girls under 13 years. Foresters’ Hall.—Piano solo test, under 10. 1Q Scout Hall.—Sword dance, under 13. Presbyterian Hall.: —Scottish or Heb. ridean song, boy or girl 12 and under 16 years; girl’s song, 14 and under If years. AFTERNOON

Opera House.— Children’s unison singing, HO and. under 14 years; recitation test, boys 13 and under 16; mezzo-soprano solo, open; Irish pg, under 13 years; children’s chorus test under 14 years; violin solo, under 1vears. . Foresters’ Hall.—Piano solo test, 10 and under 12 years. Presbyterian Hall. —.Recitation test, girls 10 and under 13 years. I evening. Opera Hall.—AH recalls lrom both day sessions; boys’ song under 10 years; English folk dancing under 18 years; verse speaking choir • character pr demi-character dance 13 years and over. The adjudicators are Mr Stanley Oliver (vocal and instrumental) assisted on Monday and Tuesday by Mr G. A. D. Mcßeth; Miss B. McKenzie (elocution) ; Miss Gladys Smyth (dancing)- In all classes judged by Mr Mcßeth there will be four recalls, the final adjudication being made by Mr Oliver. The official accompaniste will be Miss Kathleen Fairhall. The .most valuable award will !be the Daisy Reilly Memorial scholarship of £lO to the most promising competitor under 18 years of age m the piano solo classes, Final arrangements for the festival were completed at a meeting of the committee last night. Mr 1. F. McKenzie will have charge of the secretarial work ait the Opera House, with Mr J. C. Findlater as stage supervisor. Mr J. W. Velvin will be supervisor at the Foresters Hall, Mi A E. Morris supervisor at the Scout Hall and Mr G. H. ‘Percy supervisor at the Presbyterian Kail. The official opening ceremony will be performed at the Opera House ovenin" session by the Mayor (Mr.J. E Campbell) who will be introduced bir the president of the festival society (Mr F. W. Horner). The tour judges also will make their appearance on the stage.
