"REJECT SOME”
Far Too Many Challenges
According to a writer in the Wellington “Rost,” by accepting Wellington’s challenge for September 11 Canterbury would not bo forced to play three Shield matches in eight days. “Canterbury have an engagement with West Coast on September 7, and the decision to make this a. Shield, match should not have been so hurried,’' adds the Wellington paper. “Canterbury’s fixture for September 14 is with South Canterbury, and the holders are not compelled to make this a. Shield match. The fact that two matches are to be played on Saturdays does not affect the position. “Wanganui, Wairarapa, Southland, Otago, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington, Ashburton, South Canterbury, West Coast and Taranaki all appear to be keen on having a. Shield match. To accept all challenges would be to shoulder the Canterbury representatives with a very heavy undertaking. The rejection, of some challenges is to be expected, but, bearing in mind tjie object for which the Shield was presented,- the Canterbury Union should indicate by the challenges it accepts that it is prepared to meet the strongest team® among those presenting claims to possesssion of the trophy-”
