HAWERA TRACK NOTES

THIS MORNING’S WORK

COMBINE?? HUNT PREPARATIONS LOWENBERG SHAPES WELL. (By “Childers.”) Most of the Hawera candidates for the cojubined hunt meeting were given fpst ryork this morning. The outside of the course proper was open for engaged horses and two-year-olds. After the recent rain, the going was very heavy, particularly at the top of the straight. Notium (Cole) sprinted down the back stretch in most attractive manner. He was not nominated for hte Wanganui Debutante Stakes, so will probably make his first anco in the Avondale Stakes next month. •Lowenberg (Monkley) surprised by drawing out from Fersen (Adlam) over the final stages of half a mile to beat him home by three lengths in a tick over 57sec. Lowenberg was going comfortably, his effort being a smart one, despite the fact that he had a pull in the weights. On the other hand, Fersen did not appear to relish the heavy going. Arouse (Cole) sprinted down the back stretch, not being asked to make time. Bantry (Monkley), Ruaform (Sheild) and Gay Patrick (Cole) set off together from the five furlong peg, but after two furlongs had been covered in 27.3-asec., the last-mentioned was pulled up. Ruaform ran right away from Bantry to finish several lengths to the good in 1.12 1-5. Ruaform hit out boldly, it being a useful showing for a hurdler. At the same time, too mueh notice should not be taken of Bantry’s showing, for he is a lazy customer and is capable of doing much better than this. Brilliancy (Monkley) was given his first fast work when sprinted down the straight accompanied by Friesland (Grindley). Brilliancy, who is a good looking Australiambred two-year-old, in O. Cox’s stable, hit out in fine style. He has a bold action and gallops very straight for a green youngster. He will have his first start in the Wangapui Debutante Stakes, provided he progresses satisfactorily in the meanwhile. Kia Ora (Button) and Hunting Lad (Grindley) were given barrier practice, both leaving the mark -well.

Among the Jumpers. Soloist (Grindley) was responsible for a first-class display over a round of the training hurdles. He jumped fast and cleanly throughout. Just Off (Conway) and Panloff (Grindley) were schooled in company over six hurdles. Both shaped well. Panloff jumped much the faster, but was .inclined to run down his fences and Just Off gave a more even display. Yesterday morning Stanchion (Howe) and Bay Sand (Cook) were associated over five furlongs. Stanchion found the going more to his liking than liis companion and was going comfortably a couple of lengths to the good at the close in 1.144. The track at this stage was particularly heavy.
