The Mayor of Hawera (Mr J. E. Campbell) acknowledges the receipt of a cheque for the sum of £l7, being part of the proceeds of the Golden Treasure Art Union devoted to the relief of unemployment distress. Only one ponce case was dealt with by Mr. TV. H. Woodward, S.M., in the Hawera Magistrate’s Court this morning. .Malcolm Stanners, who pleaded guilty, was fined £2 .with 10s costs, for being unlawfully on licensed premises at Manaia on the night of August 5. Sergeant J. Henry appeared for the police. Coral dine should not have been called by its name, but simply “No 13,’ said a speaker at the conference of the Main Highways Board there on Tuesday. First of all the railway had been put through miles from it, then the town had lost its licensed hotels, then its half-holiday had been changed (with a bad offeeb on trade, he said), and now it was proposed to go one worse and take the main road away from the township.

In view of the recent series of floods, particularly in the Auckland province, the council of the Auckland. Institute and Museum has decided to direct the attention of the Government again to the necessity for the preservation of bush. It was resolved to suggest that settlors should be warned against the folly of destroying any further native growth on steep slopes; that the existing areas of steep Crown lands should be” fenced and the indigenous growth carefully preserved; and that the Government should encourage and assist in the destruction of willows, poplars, wattle n.nd other exotics on creek hanks.

A pair of pelicans.bought in Australia for the Auckland Zoo arrived from Sydney .by the Marama this week. Three of these birds were placed in a special cage on the vessel’s boat deck in Sydney, but owing to a disagreement among them one had to be removed in a somewhat damaged condition. The others were in good condition when they reached Auckland, although they wore obviously feeling tlio effects of the extreme cold weather. The Marama also brought nine pigeons and two pairs of fowls for private fanciers.

There is considerable fear in South Africa, that, if there are hostilities between Italy and Abyssinia, an Abyssinian victory will have a very had effect on the>natives in the Union, according to Mr J. D. Simpson, who has returned to Christchurch after a trip to South Africa. The natives, he said, who far outnumbered the Europeans, might gain a feeling of superiority under such circumstances. Mr Simpson added that at, Durban he found that several Italians, former service men, were going back to Italy' to enlist.

There are revealed from time to time .okens which were used by various ickland firms in the early days as a means of ' giving their customers dis count. Of no commercial value to-day, they have found their way into manj odd corners, or have been buried. While • digging in his garden at 311 ; .Mount Eden Hoad, twelve months ago, Mr C. S.. Clemens unearthed a token which was issued hv the firm of Hague Smith, wholesale and retail ironmonger, of Auckland, and again a few months back he found a coin circulated by the Auckland Licensed Victuallers’ Association. Both tokens resemble a. penny in appearance and appear to have been made of copper. The first one found by Mr Clemens bears the uame of the firm on one side and the head of Prince Albert on the other. The inscription on the other coin similarly refers to the Licensed Victuallers’ Association, which was established in 1871, and on the opposite side shows in relief the head of Queen Victoria as a young woman. There are no dates indicating the year in which the coins were made, but it would appear that they were in circulation in the early days of Queen Victoria’s reign.
