JUDGMENTS FOR DEBT

OPUNAKE MAGISTRATE’S COURT ONE DEFENDED ACTION Judgment hy default was given for plaintiff in the following civil cases by Mr W. H. Woodward, S.M., in tho Opunake Magistrate’s Court yesterday:—J. P. Burton v. Mrs. Massie Hori, £ll 16s Id (costs (£4 Is 6d); J. Fevre v. J. H. Pooley, £1 9s (16s); Dr Watt v. G. Thomas, £4 15s 6d (£3 10s 6d). On a judgment summons A. J. Crawford was ordered to pay the Taranaki Hospital Board £l6 12s (costs £1 Is), in default ten days’ imprisonment, the warrant to he .suspended on payment of £1 a month. UNEMPLOYMENT LEVIES Information was laid against Norman Simpson and his two sons, N. J. Simpson and H. W. Simpson, by the Labour Department for failure to pay unemployment levies since February, 1932. Constable Clouston stated that the father had promised to pay the levies from his bonus, but had failed to do so. He had also promised to pay his sons’ levies. A fine of £l* costs 12s, was inflicted on the father, and the charges against the sons were adjourned for a month to allow payment of the levies. RECEIPT PRODUCED When the claim of j. P. Burton for £7 9s lid from Tui Robinson was called, Robinson stepped forward and denied tho debt, producing a receipt for £6 12s. Burton, for whom Mr J. Foy appeared, gave evidence that' Robinson had taken bis brother and sister to the shop to get some goods and left instructions that the account should be sent to himself. The ledger showed that defendant had spent £2 18s and the mdiers about £5 each. Robinson produced the receipt and denied having recieved nn account for the full amount.

The magistrate remarked on an error of 5s in the account and gave judgment for £7 4s lid. As the dispute was largely Burton’s fault no costs were allowed.
