“When are local bodies going to make a stand against these appeals?” asked Mr S. Somerfield at the meeting of the Rllerslie Town Board when a health stamp campaign circular was received. “Local bodies are being swamped w r ith applications for funds and they should oppose this growing practice,” he added. He suggested that the board should select definite schemes for support' and refuse all others. ' It was decided to grant the campaign organisers permission to make a street collection on October 4. Over 22 years ago a man was operat: ed upon in the Auckland Hospital. He paid what he could at the time before lie was lost sight of. Years went by, and the Auckland' Hospital Board wrote him off as a bad debt. A few days ago the secretary of the board was astounded to find a letter with £5 enclosed from the man, w r ho is now living in Dunedin. In his letter the man said he still retained recollections of the good, services rendered him and said that he had managed to save up sufficient to show r his appreciation for what had been done for him over 22 years ago. The chairman of the fees committee, Mr W. G. Mulholland, said there had been a much better response recently to the board’s request for the payment of fees. The supporting programme at the Hawera Opera House to-night and tomorrow 'will include a film of the first match between the Maori Rugby team and New South Wales.
