Pihama "Bring and Buy”

Presbyterian Guild Birthday On Wednesday afternoon the supper room of the Pihama Halt was artistically decorated with bowls of spring bulbs, violets, freesias and Iceland liojipies and with rugs on the floor, when the members of the Pihama Presbyterian Church Ladies’ Guild were at a “bring and buy” party in honour of their first birthday. At one end of the room, on a table by itself,' was a beautiful cake made by Mrs Allan, jun., and iced by her daughter, Miss Margaret Allan, with one blue candle in the centre. This was later lit by Mrs Wood and the cake was duly cut and handed round. A very enjoyable programme was given by friends from Opunake, and consisted of vocal solos by Mesdames O’Sullivan, Trotter and Weatherhead, violin solos by Mrs Watt accompanied by Mrs O’Sullivan, vocal duet by Mesdames Weatherhead and Trotter and humorous reading iby the Rev. G. Wood. These items were interspersed with competitions and community singing, winners of the competitions being Mrs Sheat and Miss Holmes. Mrs T N. Watt acted as accompaniste. ' A stall laden with vegetables, eggs, cakes, jams, sauces, flowers and a quantity of work did good business. Afternoon tea was served and the Rev. Wood thanked all for their presence and help, and paid a tribute to the six ladies who had done so much during the year.
