'1 aranaki were weakened bv the absence of L. Henderson (Thistle;, Upshall (Albion) and Les Jones, .but it is doubtful if these players would have altered the result. Wanganui played as one man, showing the value of combined practice. J. Rae played an uncertain game in goal tor Taranaki, fumbling •on several occasions and allowing "Wanganui a number of openings. McKay played a fair game, but Clarke’s kicking was uncertain, Wanganui having several gift chances offered fo them. Starling was marked for the full ninety minutes and had no opportunity to show Ins best play. Jackson had an off day. The forwards were not at their best. Duke and Puddle were as sound as a rock, but their kicks, although strong, always went wide of their forwards. Iyhkl, Da;shfield aiid Deaf, were a strong halt line and had the Taranaki forwards well bottled up. Mackiq was below his Stratford form, being inclined to take the ball too far before centring. Cavaye played clever football with both head and feet and was well supported by Bain. Bain headed past Rae, but an offside was given and the goal disallowed. Taranaki were beginning to find their feet and at times outmanoeuvred Wauganui. Clarke kicked to Millar, who beat two men to centre but the rising ball hit the wires over the ground and dropped at Puddle’s feet. The clearuric© went via Jackson to Millar. Another centre met with the same fate. Starling received and sent to Hill, who passed infield to Henderson. The shot was cleared to Millar, who headed past Chestnutt, but the ball hit the crossbar. The referee, however, ruled that it passed under the nqt from the outside. Taranaki continued to press, the ball going from Gardner to Hill and across to Crawford. Henderson skied the hall and Starling received from the kick and sent on to Millar. Hill shortly after sent just outside Duke broke away down the wing, sending on to Mackie, but Barker was too last and cleared to Hill, whose centre was handled by Duke.
