FARMERS’ COMPETITIONS

HAY AND ENSILAGE JUDGING LOWGARTH AND KAPONGA Hay and ensilage entries of tlie Kaponga and Lowgarth branches of the Farmers’ Union wei'e judged on Monday and Tuesday. Referring to the Kaponga entries, the judge, Mr. C. Haynes,, of the Departjudge, Mr. C. Hynes, of the DepartGibson’s ensilage stack showed a good mixture of grasses with outstanding quality and raw material. My. C. Gordge’s pit was of good quality and raw material. The quality of the ensilage throughout was high, considering the dry conditions in the summer. The weak point in the hay competition was the poor building of the stacks.

At Lowgarth, the quality generally, and in hay particularly, did not appear to be up to the previous year’s standard. The hay appeared to have been excessively weathered. Luncheon was provided at. Kaponga by Mr. and Mrs J. Kaiser and afternoon tea by Mr and Mrs J. Gibson. At Lowgarth, luncheon was provided by Mr and Mrs F. Willan and afternoon tea by Mr and Mrs A. T. Burke. In the hay competition results given below, the columns relate to raw material (25), quality (50), building (25) and total. The figures in brackets are the maximum. In the ensilage results the columns are as follow: Raw' material (20), quality (50),. cover (15), waste (15), and total.
