Alton Birthday The fourth anniversary of the Alton branch of the W.D.F.U. was celebrated last, Wednesday in the Alton Hall, •when Mrs Tayier presided and welcomed visitors from Hawera, Manutahi Whenuakura and Waverley and from Patea and Kakaramea Women’s Institutes. Apologies tor non-attendance ■were received from Mrs Walton (Patea) and Mesdames Oakley, G. foreman and Girling and from Opunake, Eltham and Whakamara. Afternoon tea was served by the committee and the president expressed her thanks to all for their assistance during the past year, especially Mrs A- Gibus for making and donating the cake, which was a beautiful piece of work, decorated with badges and emblems of the W.D.F.U. and four candles. Mrs Burnand then lit the candles, which were extinguished by Mrs H. Sutherland. Mrs Burnand cut the cake and handed it around for all to find that it was just as good inside as outside. Good wishes for the future success of the branch were expressed by Mrs Meuli, on behalf of the South Taranaki Executive and the Hawera branch, in the absence of Mrs A. E. Death, Mrs McFarlane (Waverley), Mrs Seown on behalf of Mrs L. Hamilton (Manutahi), Mrs Wither (Whenuakura), Mrs Carey (Patea Women’s Institute) and Mrs F. Ramsbottorn (Kakaramea Women’s Institute). A short programme was presented by Miss T. Hall (pianoforte solo), Mrs Gannaway, Hawera (songs), Mrs J. C. Robb, of Hawera (recitations) and Mrs Masters, of Patea (songs). A sketch, ‘"Between the Soup and the Savoury,” was presented by members of the Kakaramea Women’s Institute Drama Circle.

A display of work, the result of tno year’s demonstrations, was staged for competition and ,the prize-winners were Airs L. Hunt first, Mrs Palmer second and Airs Illingworth third. Before the social terminated Airs H. Sutherland asked Mts Tayier to accept a small gift from the members as an appreciation of her good work and hoped that she would be with the members to preside over many more birthdays. Mrs Tayier, when rising to reply, was greeted with musical honours. She thanked Airs Sutherland for her kind words and the members for their gift. Posies were presented to Alesdames Tayier, Sutherland and Gibbs and the afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
