HAWERA PLAY READING
BRITISH DRAMA LEAGUE. * At the recent annual meeting of groups comprising the South Taranaki area of the British. Drama League it was requested that play readings be held at regular intervals to encourage a wider appreciaiton of dramatic art and tlie expression of individual ability. Accordingly, the first of a series these readings arranged by the executive was held in Huwera last night before an audience of between 40 and 50 enthusiasts and the hope was expressed that as the series are continued this number would be increased by the attendance of others interested in the work. In the choice of plays for the initial readings a happy selection was made while the miniature stage in the lecture hall at the Hawera Technical High School proved ideal for the purpose for which it was required. The president (Mr AV. G. Simpson) voiced his executive’s appreciation of the action of the High School Board of Governors in permitting tlie use of the hall and also tlie generosity of Mrs Paine >n providing drapes. He also appealed for 'increased membership of the league, and mentioned that, at a recent meeting the executive had decided to hold the Area. Dramatic Festival on September 26 and following nights. A’ few days after that the North Island festival would be held at Stratford and a few days later the Do minion finals would be decided at Hastings. Three one-act plays were read last night, the first “Wurzel Flummery'’ (by A. Millie), being presented by Miss W. Knight who took the part of Margaret Crawshaw. Miss Knight was assisted by Miss Nancy Duckworth (as Viola Crawshaw), Messrs. W. S. Gibson (Robert Crawshaw), Patterson (Ric.hard Merton, M.P.) and Nicholson (Dennis Clifton).
‘‘How He Lied to Her Husband” (George Bernard Shaw) was presented by Mr G. Chuck (who took the patt of the poet Jover) and his associates were Mrs Inez Corrigan (as Mrs Bumpus) and Air W. W. Thomas as the husband.
The final presentation, ‘‘The Will” (J. M, Barrie) was by Mr W. G. Simpson (who took the part of Phillip Ross) and assisting him were Mrs G. Villars (as Mrs Ross) and Messrs. C. J. Cummings (Devize senr.), T. Anderson (Devize juiir.) A. Braid (Surtees), and Hill (Creed).
A new experiment in inoculation is to be tried at Honolulu, where the leprosy has been spreading rapidly of late. .The physicians have concluded that the only safeguard is vaccination with the leprosy microbe, and they will hegin vaceiuating as sobn as they can find someone who will submit to it.
