COTTON’S UNCANNY GOLF
Course Record of 68 in British Open Championship PLAY IN HEAVY RAIN COSTLY LAST HOLE (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright). Received 2.30 p.m. to-day. LONDON, June 2G. Heavy rain and bad visibility coming in did not prevent Cotton from returning a record of GS in the British open golf championship. The round was unrivalled for sheer ease of stroke and uncanny accuracy. Cotton has never driven so far and straight. At the first hole of 4G3 yards his tee shot finished 70 yards from the flag. He reached the ninth of 490 yards with a •drive and a mashie niblick. He went out in 33. He started homeward in torrential rain and was bunkered at the last three holes, but he redeemed his mistakes with magnificent putting.. Kirkwood took 43 for the first nine holes and tore up his card at the 14th. In the “Daily Telegraph” Mr Greenwood says he has never seen more flawless golf than Cotton’s. He did six under fours for 17 holes, and his oni> •disaster was at the last hole, where he found a bunker, costing him six. McDonald-Smith, going out, did not seem likely to seriously challenge Cotton. He began the homeward journey with five and after that his putter began to -work miracles, putts of every length going down and his figures for the last eight holes were 3 3 3 4 4 3 5 3.
