Surprise Defeat of Tukapa by Clifton Visitors

KAPONGA LOSE AT PATEA ATHLETIC BEATEN AT PATEA WITH the Taranaki senior Rugby competition past the halfway mark, Stratford remains unbeaten, having defeated Star by 24 points to 6 at Stratford on Saturday. One of the surprises of Saturday was Tukapa’s defeat at the hands of Clifton by such a big margin. Although it was anticipated that Clifton would fully extend Tukapa, it was not expected that they would win by such a margin as 23 points to 5. At Hawera the two local teams met, and Hawera had no difficulty in defeating Athletic by 25 points to nil. The match was very patchy, and at times the standard of play was very poor. ’ Patea had a two-points win over .Ivaponga at Patea, scoring 9 points to the visitors’ 7 points. At Eltham, the home fifteen registered 13 points over United Old Boys while the latter failed to open their account. Opunake travelled to New Plymouth to meet New Plymouth Old Boys, whom they defeated by 8 points to nil. Two old rivals in Okaiawa and Waimate met on the former’s ground, Okaiawa winning by 19 points to 9.

The defeat of Stratford by either Opunake or Hawera is now eagerly awaited, as that eventuality will stimulate an interest in the competition greater than has been the case for years.
