ANZAC DAY SERVICE.

(To the Editor.) •Sir, —In your columns last night, a correspondent, “Anzfac, ” (complained of the fact that there is to be no Anzac Day commemoration service in the Opera House to-morrow. In fairness to my company, I would like to state that this year it has not been approached by any organisation for the use of the theatre. If it had been approached, it would with pleasure have granted free use of the building, as it has done for every service of such nature held an the theatre. Your correspondent’s suggestion that someone or

s6me influence must be doing away with the service at the Opera House has no foundation in fact or theory to niy knowledge at any rate. —I am, etc., J. H. HOB-TON, (Manager Hawera Theatres.

TOTALISATOR WAGES (To the Editor.) Sir, —In respect of “Fair Deal’s' letter of the 23rd regarding the inadequate pay the- girl attendants >it the totalisator receive, some people will agree, even the pampered relief worker. Hut “Fair Deal” is either ignorant of the pay of relief workers or has such a small mind that he must halve a poke at one section who, he thinks, cannot hit back. Many of the pampered ones would he pleased to do the job and could, to let the girls have their holidays. Also, if some of the men who had regular jobs went on their holidays and let their less fortunate .comrades get a job it would be a fair deal. That is why there are so many unemployed in this town, because of people working in their spare time. There is an old saying, “Where ignorance is bliss ’tis folly to be wise.” Hoping that “Fair De'al’’ always get what he calls a fair deal. I am, etc., ONE, OF THE PAMPERED.

HAWERA ANZAC SERVICE. (To the Editor.) ■Sir,—For the information of your correspondent, “Anzae,” who in yesterday’s “Star ” asked what influence led to the abandonment of the Anzac service which in years other than last has been held in the Opera House, I Avould state that the decision to hold ah open air service was arrived at at a. meeting;- convened by me of representatives of the Ministers’ Association, Returned Soldiers’ Association and Military. Arrangements have been made, whereby seats will be provided for elderly people.— ; l am, etc., J. E. CAMP BELT, Mayor of Hawera.
