WEST END RINK WINS

EASTER BOWLING TITLE DOUGLASS DEFEATS SPUEDLE FINAL AT PARK GREEN.

The South Taranaki Easter howling tournament was won yesterday by a rmk from the West End (.New Plymouth; Ulub for the first time since the tournament was instituted, ivhen Douglass defeated Spurdie (Ingiewooa) by 22 points to 18. The final' was played between more or less heavy shower .under conditions which were riot conducive to good bowling.

Sptudie was unfortunate that he did not receive the support from his link x’hat Douglass did from his. lri the earlier rounds ,the Inglewood players were well on, their game and sent down some very fine shots but under the weather conditions which existed they could do nothing right. Douglass was driving well ana in this department ot the game he received a good deal ot support from Sheehy, his No. 3, who generally managed to come to light when he ivas rieeded. On the other hand, Spurdle’s No, 3, when asked to drive, could not get anywhere near where he was required. At the end of the fifth head the game was 3-all, but Douglass scored two fours on end' to put an. entirely different complexion on the game, and secure a lead which was never made up again. The ninth head was “burnt” by bfieehy and in the subsequent head Douglass scored a single. Spurdie was two down on the next head when he burned the head ✓ with his last bowl, Douglass doing the same on the next one. Spurdie scored threes on the terith and the 11th, which made the game 12—10 in favour of West End. At the next head, however, Douglass secured four and at the 13th Spurdie scored two, which made the score IG—l2 in favour of West End. Singles were scored on the next four heads, Spurdie notching a three on the 18th to make the score 19—16. On the next two heads Douglass totalled three, which made it necessary for Spurdie to require six to tie on the last head. When the Inglewood skip •went down to bowl he was three or four down and the only chance was for 'him to burn the head, which he tried to do. He succeeded, however, in trailing kitty into the ditch, which left him lying two and the match ended 22 —18 in fa.vour of Douglass. At the conclusion of the final the trophies were presented by the Park club president (Mr J. J. Goodwin), who extended congratulations to the winners on behalf of the tournament committee. He referred to the fact that the tournament had been the success which it had always oeen and lie extended tlie thanks of the committee to the visiting rinks which made that success possible. . , t „

naki player had kept trie title in the province. He congratulated Sutherland on his win, ana remarked that lie had been playing for only five years. The club was indebted to the tournament secretaries, Messrs J. H. Boon and F. D. Johns and to tne committee, starters, groundsrrien and to An and Mrs A. Sanders for the catering. In congratulating Dale on his exhibition Dr Walker pointed out that Dale had three times previously been run-ner-up in the Tarariaki championship and had won the title in 1923. Thanks to the visitors for their participation were expressed by Mr Johns, who named several who were regular players at the tournament. It was unfortunate that the weather had been so unfavourable, but the gathering had been a success, nevertheless.

Dr F. C. Hutchison, Wanganui, replied on behalf of the visitors. They were always assured of a welcome at New Plymouth and they were always pleased to come. He considered the links well worthy of the Doriunion contests, particularly lin, October when they were at their best. A presentation of a golf bag was made to Mr Johns who played in all the 30 annual tournaihents held by the club. Not only was Mr Johns an enthusiastic player, said Dr Walker, but he had also been a valuable asset on the administrative side of the club for many years.
