The machine gun of: the future is described in the “Pall Mall Budget.” The inventor is Mr Maxim, of New England, and he has given England the first offer of his patent rights for the machine. The gull wall- fire at any speed up to 600 shots a minute.
The clerk to the Hawera County and the Hawera Road Board is preparing to issue summonses, so that property owners in arrears had better look to the matter..
A crowded public meeting was held at Lovuka on March 29, and a resolution carried favourable to the annexation of Fiji to New Zealand. It was decided to prepare a petition to the New Zealand Legislature praying for endorsement • * » w *
The London cable states that Mr Gladstone has admitted that the British Government was instrumental in causing the suppression of the Basphore Egyptian, which has been the subject of protest by France. * * * * *
The shipment of frozen mutton, consisting of 10,000 carcases, ex ship Marlborough, from Oamaru, has arrived in London, been examined, and found to be in good condition.
A telegram from Wellington states that the Government has received a cable from London with reference to the ltussian-Afghan difficulty, ■ -which indicated that the colony is to he prepared with defences. The Government anticipates that the British Navy will be represented within the next few days in New Zealand 'waters by two war vessels. * * * m #
Speaking anent the recent promotion to-the Legislative Council made by the Stout-Vogel Government, a writer in the “Auckland Star” says: “It will be a sight for sore eyes to see Mr Shrimski lolling back in one of those gorgeous crimson chairs, and gazing patronisingly upon his erstwhile colleagues as they file into the Chamber to hear the gubernatorial platitudes. Dr. Pollen will smile blandly acrossJihe. benches.as lie,greets the member who has manifested: such malevolent designs upon his pension.”
